Project SHIELD, launched in January 2020, set out to tackle one of the most pressing challenges in modern energy networks: integrating rooftop solar generation into existing low-voltage (LV) electricity grids. By leveraging innovative methodologies and a blend of traditional and non-traditional data sources, this initiative empowered Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) to enhance network visibility and dynamically manage capacity, ensuring the safe and reliable integration of distributed energy resources (DERs).
At the heart of Project SHIELD’s success was the development of Dynamic Operating Envelopes (DOEs), enabling DNSPs to adaptively balance grid imports and DER exports. Through a cutting-edge cloud-based platform and state estimation software, the project delivered real-time insights into DER hosting capacity, voltage management, and network stability. The collaboration between industry leaders like Luceo, research institutions such as the University of Queensland, and energy providers including Energex and Ergon Energy showcased the power of public-private partnerships in driving innovation.
Supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Project SHIELD demonstrated its scalability and potential for wider adoption. With its proven methodologies, the project not only accelerated renewable energy integration but also paved the way for smarter, data-driven energy management across LV networks.
